World's Most Expensive Retirement

September 19, 2024

Naples, Florida

I can't help but smile as my feet battle a million granules of sand in counting, gathering in my shoes. I'm juggling a foldable chair, an oversized beach towel, and a 20-pound bag of things I convinced myself I needed. My knees would most likely give out at any moment. This is the life.

After laying down my beach towel, I forcefully eliminate any signs of sand and collapse into it. There is truly nothing like the sounds of waves that I can't hear over Brent Faiyaz playing in my earbuds, and re-reading the same page of my book ten times over. I didn't retain any of that. Let me restart from the beginning. I say to myself... for the next half hour.

Indiana sunsets can’t hold a candle to the blues, pinks, and purples that pour into the Naples sky, seeping through the clouds. The sun bids a stunning farewell, melting into the horizon and leaving behind traces of fiery orange.

This is the epitome of what a beach is supposed to be. Never overcrowded, respectful neighbors, and beautiful water with waves that never go too high. It’s the kind of place you’d escape to if you wanted to go off the grid and spend $100,000 a year doing so—or have the most expensive retirement ever.

The suburban neighborhoods are kept to perfection, with grass that wouldn't dare to yellow and luxury cars parked in every driveway. Despite their affluence, the residents remain kind without a hint of superiority. The city is dotted with luxury boutiques and fine dining spots. But most importantly, you can go to Turco Taco and see that anything can go on a taco. With each one only costing $5, you'll quickly find yourself breaking the taco barriers.

If anything, know that when you visit Naples, this is a place of peace and tranquility. You'll find the beauty in boredom. You'll forget about school or work and fall into a world where your biggest worry is staying upright when carrying your beach gear through the sand.
